Although I wasn’t in the business school at Boston College, I was a Communications major, and took enough marketing and advertising classes to consider myself well versed in a lot of that stuff. This movie is a comprehensive history of modern-age advertising, and speaks to the advertising gurus out there. Check the trailer below.
Talk about cutthroat! I’m still trying to get into that industry in some capacity, though. For the time being, Washingtonians such as myself are out of luck, because the independent film isn’t running anywhere around here for a minute. But if you are elsewhere, you may be able to catch it. Check the locations for screenings HERE.

phenomenal documentary about two kids on the west side of chicago and their lives that revolve entirely around basketball. you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll do it all when you watch this. it’s a gem that more people should see. anybody who ever played a sport will love it. i don’t think anybody doesn’t like this movie. real talk. so if you can only watch one of these movies, i’d go with this.

my apologies for being late on posting this, but it was getting hectic.
my cousin hit me up about this ill documentary called CALL+RESPONSE, and i figured i’d put you all on, too. it exploits the thriving slavery industry in developing countries around the world, and chronicles the responses that various artists, from talib kweli to moby to natacha beningfield (and so many more) create. to quote the synopsis: “music is part of the movement against human slavery.” it’s a deep film. super scholar dr. cornel west narrates it all, connecting the music of the american slave fields to the popular music we listen to today, and offering this connection as a rallying cry for the modern abolitionist movement currently brewing. check the trailer below.
more about the film:
CALL+RESPONSE is a first of its kind feature documentary film that
reveals the world’s 27 million dirtiest secrets: there are more slaves
today than ever before in human history. CALL+RESPONSE goes deep
undercover where slavery is thriving from the child brothels of
Cambodia to the slave brick kilns of rural India to reveal that in
2007, Slave Traders made more money than Google, Nike and Starbucks
combined.
Luminaries on the issue such as Cornel West, Madeleine Albright, Daryl
Hannah, Julia Ormond, Ashley Judd, Nicholas Kristof, and many other
prominent political and cultural figures offer first hand account of
this 21st century trade. Performances from Grammy-winning and
critically acclaimed artists including Moby, Natasha Bedingfield, Cold
War Kids, Matisyahu, Imogen Heap, Talib Kweli, Five For Fighting,
Switchfoot, members of Nickel Creek and Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers,
Rocco Deluca move this chilling information into inspiration for
stopping it.
it’s been playing for a few days in NYC at the tribeca cinemas, and it’ll keep rolling until december 14th. for showtimes and tickets, click here. for more information, hit up the official CALL+RESPONSE website.
speaking of cornel west, studio 43 head honcho kenny burns got a chance to chop it up with the man at the national black arts festival in the A a few days ago. outkast’s big boi also makes an appearance. CRUCIAL! footage below.
