It’s Friday, and Big Sean just dropped a pretty trill video last night for his freestyle over Gucci’s “Lemonade”. Nobody has the song up, they just got the YouTube. So I decided to do you guys a favor and get you the mp3 before everybody else. Download at the bottom, but check the video directly below.
This is the kinda song that makes you say, “oh, ok. He’s actually kinda nice.” All punch lines and swag rap, but you know what? I’m all the way with it. Say what you will, but Sean is kinda nice. Some of the lines he says will make you scratch your head thinking about how he even thought about that metaphor. It’s some chill stuff, so don’t expect Wu Tang bars, but don’t think he isn’t rappin’, either.
That’s how I felt after he killed that Chip Tha Ripper joint “Fat Raps” alongside Curren$y. Speaking of Hot $pitta, he did his own version of the same beat. I’ll drop that below. Download both tracks below, and tell me who had the better version.

Just when you thought the newest soulful white boy on the block couldn’t bring us anymore heat…he does. Actually, to be fair, Mayer Hawthorne probably had nothing to do with this, as it’s a remix by the Los Angeles-based deejaying duo, Classixx. These guys seem to be related to King Midas, because everything they flip turns to gold.
Don’t expect anything too intense, either. This remix is as smooth as your skin was when you were a youngin, before the breakouts and shaving and stuff. Shout out to my godbrother Kareem for putting me on this over the holiday break.

Oh, and here’s the original for your collection as well. Tell me which one you enjoy more in the comment section.

Sidenote: Did you know that Mayer Hawthorne was originally a DJ, and all this singing stuff was pretty much a joke to him until he realized people liked it?
Sidenote #2: I’m in this airport lounge in London, and I just saw the slickest Asian guy ever. He was only like 15 with a broken arm, but his swag was something out of the Harajuku District in downtown Tokyo. Looks like I just figured out where I’m going for my next international power move.
The blog comment frequenters and obnoxious tweeters of the music world often chastised the DC hip hop pioneer Wale for allowing Gucci La Flare to bless the second verse of his (in my opinion) most radio-friendly hit yet, “Pretty Girls”. That song should do damage around the nation if things go as planned.
I personally loved Gucci’s verse, and adding him included a whole new demographic that Wale probably owuldn’t have reached if Gucci Gucci didn’t bless the track. But that’s besides the point. For those who couldn’t feel that version, DMV crooner Raheem DeVaughn heard your cries for help and has come to the rescue. He and 21-year-old Phil Ade, his solo signee (also from our area. And he’s Nigerian. Let’s go.) to his newly formed imprint, 368 Music Group, decided to put their own spin on the ode to bad ass females. I appreciate both versions, and it’s cool to have an unofficial DMV Remix to the song that goes harder than most joints in the clubs these days. No new verse from Mr. Folarin, but that verse didn’t need to be upgraded.

If you need more Phil Ade in your life, you can grab his critically acclaimed mixtape that I posted here a while back. HERE you go. New mixtape, The Letterman, dropping soon. I was fortunate enough to be in the stu’ with him and various producers and I’m gonna say this now…he’s about to turn a lot of heads. The only reason you probably haven’t heard about him is because he’s too humble to talk a lot of sh!t.
He can perform well, too. Don’t believe me? Check out this footage taken by 1st Impression Studios.

Found some Wi-Fi over in England, and got to download some new music that I missed over the last month. Let’s get it.
So everybody’s been saying Usher can never top Confessions. I won’t count him out, but that was an incredible album. It probably sparked a second baby boom to be all the way real. So far, this new project of his sounds like it’ll be a lot more playful and freaky than any of his past work. I’m sure after that heavily-publicized breakup, he’s very much single and ready to mingle. Whatever. I could care less about that stuff. If the joint rocks, it rocks. Jam it and be the judge.

This track is pretty smooth, and Nicki crushes her verse, but the real reason it stands out to me is because of Polow Da Don’s production work.
I’m almost certain nobody else caught this clever flip of a sample. The self-proclaimed “King of the White Girls” took a classic cut from Stevie Wonder’s Innervisions (1973. A certified classic album in my book. I used to run around my house blasting this so loud in the living room that one time, a glass broke. I put that on everything.) and flipped it. If you go to 1:11 in the song, you’ll hear the same melody they use in the chorus, except chopped up a little bit. It repeats and repeats throughout the song during the bridge/hook. It’s incredible, and I’m surprised I even caught the sample use.

BRO FRANKLIN IS BACK! My favorite uncle, notorious for his ability to pop and lock better than anybody on his home continent. This latest episode is him crashing an album release party at the church. He literally takes over. I don’t even think he’s supposed to be up on stage. Talk about the holy ghost.
My lord. Thanks to Eki for showing me this.
PREVIOUSLY: Bro Franklin & Namata!

So when I was out on the left coast with my man Hustle Simmons (who, by the way, hustles pretty damn hard. I’m pretty sure he left Cali with more gear than he brought, and didn’t spend a dime. That’s what the f*** I’m talking about.), we went to this joint called Purple Lounge on Sunset. When I say this joint was epic, I really mean it. I walked in and saw a woman in a glass case outfitted as a bedroom, on a Macbook. She was in the middle of this hotel/lounge, acting as if nobody was around her. Kinda like an aquarium, except with a chick in it. Let’s call it a chicquarium. Look:

Exactly. Anyway, in my excitement, I began drinking heavily in this place, which was complete with swingsets and all these crazy lights. In my drunken rage, I met two people you are about to hear from. Dude Royal is an artist out of Cali who actually went to school with some of my friends. This man was scooping breezies left and right, real cool dude. Rob Roy, a Florida transplant who you may remember from that ridiculously awesome “Fur In My Cap” video (if you don’t, HERE), was also posted up, and in my drunken stupor I tried to introduce myself, but don’t really remember how that ended up, although we been doing some e-mailing, so it couldn’t have been that bad. The one thing I do know, however, that the two make some magic on this chill ass track that you’re about to hear.

Ski Team & God’s Paparazzi created this laid back, summer time beat, to keep people like me and the rest of the east coast representers warm during the cold days approaching. If you like what you heard, you can hear more at the Creme de la Creme CMJ Showcase 2009 on Saturday, October 24 @ BLVD (199 Bowery, New York, NY).

Other artists that will be performing are (in alphabetical order) 12th Planet, Adam Tensta, Christian TV (who performed at Purple Lounge and was pretty cool), Curt@!n$, D*Star, Donnis, Dude Royal, G-Eazy, Gina Turner, He Say She Say, Hey Champ (we’ve blogged about them. One of them went to BC, too. Keep up.), Hollywood Holt, Mickey Factz, Rob Roy, Roy G and The Biv, The Beatards, The Cataracs, U-N-I and more. 9pm – 4am. 21+ Free with RSVP (do so here).

This song is almost two years old, and it sounds like it should have come out in 2015. Too futuristic. my cousin YemSquad put me on Crystal Castles when I hit Atlanta during a phenomenal Easter Break last year. They are heavily inspired by first-generation video games, as you can probably tell once this song starts, but it doesn’t get old. To me, at least.

I’m about to put out a mix with some different stuff to showcase everything other than rap that I’ve been jamming, because rap no longer really does it for me like it used to. I’m liking these electronic artists more, they bring some inspiring innovation to the music game.

P.S.: I’ll give a $1 bill to whoever can figure out what the woman is saying in the song. Don’t Google it, either. It will only steer you wrong. Take my word. Also, anybody have other artists I should check out?
Any person in a sticky circumstance can relate to this song. The sample is insane, from an old Bob Marley song I believe, and is one of the hardest Supreeme songs I’ve ever heard. You may have heard the song a while ago (get it here if you haven’t), but this video has a new verse that’s not on the mp3 version. I don’t know who that guy is, but he kills his 16 bars. Enjoy it. i dedicate it to my seniors who aren’t sure they’re on track for graduation, and my people in economical binds. We’ll make it out.
Also, I remember when 2dopeboyz politely disagreed with my statement that Supreeme was the best group out of Atlanta since OutKast. Sure, it was a bold statement, but it got me heard, as they quickly posted Supreeme’s mixtape up for others to come to their own conclusions and even linked my post in theirs.
The first time I heard these guys, I think it was with my girl Alex. She had all these tracks on a random CD, and I popped it in the car’s stereo system. I got to this joint and brought it back like 30 times. This was the song I heard. It’s unreleased, and I don’t know if they’ll be upset that I’m throwing it to the internet, but I’ll tell you one thing: it’s trill. It’s from ‘06 or ‘07, but it just made sense to give it to you guys today.

dom kennedy is one of the few new dudes out on the left coast that caught me immediately. after i heard that “watermelon sundae” i quickly acquired anything and everything i could get my hands on of his. i wasn’t aware this was dropping so suddenly, and actually got word via twitter. what a pleasant surprise.
the first two (25th hour mixtape up and future street / drug sounds) still get regular rotation in my iTunes, and they say third time’s a charm, so maybe this mixtape will be the one to make the masses believe he’s a serious contender in this new age rap game. spots have yet to be solidified, and i’m rooting for him, but my word doesn’t mean a damn thing. regardless, i want to know how you feel. leave your thoughts in the comment section; i’m leaving you with a couple of sample tracks to jam, as well as the download link below. oh, and shout out to the los angeles leakers for mixing and mastering this joint. what a trill name to have. ha. enjoy.
