even though i’m on the west, i’m still supporting my area. i got some exclusive footage from DC to BC correspondents out of h-town, throwing us the first live performance of “pretty girls” that i’ve seen. no gucci mane verse, but tre is there in full effect, singing the hook like he’s at the go-go.

i also got my man cayan’s latest jam, “live from the capital”, produced by my man A.B. the Pro. you guys already know how i felt his mixtape, get it here if you still haven’t, all crazy beats.

man oh man, this track is ridiculous. produced by mo digga. west coast anthem from a DMV artist. no joke. marky spittin’, the synths are hittin’, the entire thing is something you would hear in game’s 6-4 impala. and he isn’t even jump on this beat, man – he’s frolicking. it sounds too easy for him.

re-up. enough people didn’t get this joint, it’s way too trill for people to miss it.

off of tabi’s new album, coming soon (it’s either fresh or superstar, as he has two more albums coming. he’s on that plies album release schedule – every few months, baybeh.) probably my favorite of the tabi songs i’ve heard. the beat is too vicious, and the title alone deserves applause. raheem needs more respect in the R&B game, too. he’s top 5 in my opinion. show him that R-E-S-P-E-C-T! i’m demanding it now! his voice is sweeter than a plate of yams. with extra syrup. oh boy.

i won’t lie. i don’t know much about this guy, but he’s nice. nobody ever e-mailed me his stuff except my homie major from goadome talk, and i don’t even know why. he’s a nigerian-american like myself, and he’s from maryland, like myself. so i already support the man. ha. R&B crooner raheem devaughn has recently signed him to his boutique label, 368 music group, and that this mixtape dropped sometime last week.

my hunch is that there will be comparisons to wale, because they are both nigerian and from the area, and their flows are somewhat similar. but i think his flow and subject matter distinguishes him enough for the chit chatter to cease. i wish i had more info about the guy; i don’t have a bio for you because i didn’t do thorough research. sometimes it’s better like that, and i can be pleasantly surprised like i am now. i’ll make sure i’ll keep an eye out for his future projects. jam a couple samples, and get the mixtape below.

let me know how you feel about the project via the comment section. if you caught the post i did on sneakerpimps DC, the flyer tells me that he’ll be performing alongside clipse, wale, kingpin slim, and other area artists this upcoming weekend. i heard his stage presence is pretty vicious, so catch him there and be your own judge.

AP The Prince – Bonafide.

ap the prince. DCtoBC.com

i’ve never posted an AP the prince track on the blog, but i’ve heard a few joints, from freestyle videos to loosies on other sites and his myspace page, and his confidence and dare i say swagger is what won me over. he’s also not afraid to take risks, or rather, cross over genres. this joint is like an electro / hip-hop fusion, but don’t think he goes soft on it. the rock ‘n’ roll influence actually makes the track harder than most. off th new album entitled bella loona love. call me crazy, but i can hear chamillionaire on the remix of this with no problems. slightly reminds me of his collabo w/ weezy, “rock star”,  which you can hear below as well and tell me if you co-sign or disagree wholeheartedly. whatever. enjoy both.

the paxtons. work. DCtoBC.comDC / chicago duo the paxtons come with some heat on this one! their latest mixtape, work, is co-signed by The Smoking Section, UBIQ & atmos. featuring collabos with RA the MC, AP the Prince, Britney Packnett, and TeLuv, and some trill production. i feel like they make their own beats, but i’m not sure! i like the fact that they rep two areas, you can hear the distinct sound of each in their rhymes, whether it be locations they talk about, or that fast midwest flow they occasionally hit you with. anyway, check the awesome samples, and download below.

Diamond District – In The Ruff [Mixtape] [Clean Version].

diamond district. in the ruff. DCtoBC.com

In The Ruff is the highly anticipated debut album from new DC hip hop group The Diamond District, created by state veterans Oddisee, X.O. (yes, the same man from studio 43. he’s working overtime.) & YU. it’s the answer for any lover of hip hop who asks the question – “Where did that grimy east coast sound go?”

the three members of the diamond district. DCtoBC.com

the group was founded by rapper/ producer oddisee (right), who has a long list of production & collaboration credits with the likes of Freeway, Talib Kweli, Siagon, Little Brother, Trek Life, Charles Hamilton, Jazzy Jeff, Buck Shot, Royce the 5′9”, Nikki jean, Muhsinah, J-live, Lil Fame of MOP, Skyzoo and many more. Oddisee’s soulful, haunting samples over bass-heavy beat breaks create the perfect instrumentals for him, X.O. (middle) & YU to match with their street savvy, politically conscious lyrics.

that raw mid-90’s Boom-Bap themed album for the DC state of mind, destined to appeal to all lovers of hip hop’s golden era, managing to travel back in time and push the boundaries of DC Hip-Hop simultaneously.

now who says i don’t post great hip hop? legendary status for this mixtape, should have got more love by the e-masses for sure.

K-Beta – 89 to 2009 [Mixtape, Mixed By DJ Alizay].

k-beta. DCtoBC.com

now this right here, this is a trill mixtape. repping for the V part of the DMV (that’s virginia, guys),  k-beta links up with DC’s most renown spinmaster, DJ alizay, for a project that i just got on like a week or so ago, even though it dropped in mid-may. i feel almost foolish that i didn’t jump on this when they sent it to my inbox. to my innerloop records people, i apologize for sleeping!

k-beta. what do you need to know: he’s way too good at rapping. like, way too good. he just keeps flowing. i ran into some guys in adams morgan the other day who praised his live show as well, so you can bet when he performs, i’ll be around. this latest project has beta lyrically bodying tracks from – you guessed it – 1989 to 2009.  that’s 20 solid years of hip hop. the beat selection is crazy too, it’s like a walk down memory lane, and he leaves no stone unturned, from underground joints to mainstream and everything in between. it doesn’t hurt to have alizay choppin’ it up all over the tape, too. he even contrbutes a verse!

check out these samples, and download the mixtape by clicking the artwork, or the link below.

k-beta. album cover. DCtoBC.comand just because i like to spice things up, i’m giving $20 to the 1st person who can tell me every the original beat (meaning the producer and the rapper) for all the songs featured on the mixtape. i’m not lying, either. i gave away chillin’ tees for free, why wouldn’t i do this?!

put your answers in the comment section. i may even give partial credit, who knows. let’s get it.

The Industry Has Been Pimpin' Go-Go Music, & DC's Judah Decides to Call It Like He Sees It!
Wednesday June 10th 2009, 11:28 am
Filed under: mixtapes, music, welcome to DC

judah presents...the DMV makes it, the Industry takes it. DCtoBC.com

what an impressive mix right here. DC-based producer (and all around DMV representer) judah decides to set the record straight. this could be one of the big reasons DC has been overlooked for all these years…the industry has been stealing the city’s sound and throwing it to the mainstream!

that’s judah’s claim, and he proves his point. assisted by one of DC’s finest, DJ M.A.F., judah uses an eclectic assortment of jams that we all know laced with short but potent interludes to narrate the story of the “pimping of go-go” as he described it to me. from the evolution of chuck brown’s “extended groove” to the creation of the genre, to the industry’s swindling of DC’s characteristic sound, it’s all in this 16 track mixtape.

this is for anybody who appreciates go-go music and mainstream jams alike. somebody could write a legitimate research paper using this mixtape as a primary source! shout out to judah for bringing this argument to the forefront, and for calling out a bunch of people. chuuuuch. click the artwork above
