the grammy-award-winning 9th wonder has been mentoring DC-by-way-of-NC hip hop group M1 platoon, and i can hear the progress. the group is back with a leak from their third mixtape, We Not Them Pt. 3, coming soon. shout out to vaughn, formally known as arafat yates, for sending me this joint to spread to you guys.

and if that sample they use sounds familiar, it’s because it’s from stacey epps’ “floatin”, which you can jam and download below.

stussy x commonwealth inauguration event footage!
my man adrian hooked me up with vimby’s crucial footage of a definite highlight from over inauguration weekend, the stussy x commonwealth inaugural bash. check it below.
everybody came out. wale was in there posted like a lamp, 9th wonder was spinning classics on the 1’s and 2’s, bun b was leaning a bit, and yelling out every word of every track 9th threw on the turntables (in a much higher-pitched voice than i would have expected. i mean, i’m not saying he had a high-pitched voice. but go listen to those tracks, his voice is booming. in person, it doesn’t really sound like that. just a mere observation. i know there are some co-signers out here on that statement!) i arrived as david banner was being escorted into the store from his luxurious whipsicle, and saw the big ass crowd that a party with this type of hype attracts. i was taken aback, but luckily i caught j.ben.ok outside, and him and jay promo got me in that joint with the quickness. shout out to those two, otherwise i’d still be out in the cold.

once i got in there, it was glorious. i got a chance to chop it up with everybody. dizzy was in there, taking flicks like the local celebrity he is. X.O. and benji were in there having a great time. i finally met oddisee, the man who i used to harrass to help me make beats back two years ago. really cool guy, and my favorite producer out of the DMV by far. he can rap too, look out for some of his new stuff on here soon! oh, and i had to school VJ on his twitter game, because it was limbo pole low. yikes. met a bunch of cool people, and saw some of the sexiest ladies i’ve ever seen in the area. i always feel like they only come out on nights like that, because i can’t ever find them otherwise. somebody tell them to holler at me, man. you already know i’m a shy guy.
highlight of the night? my man lucas hooked me up with the collector’s tees. you know i’m frugal, but i had to let people know i was around for the day history was made. 1.20.09, aka “yes we did day” in my book.
shout out to everybody who came out, and to stussy and commonwealth, for putting on something special, and adrian and the others involved in the coordination. that whole DMV scene, if i can call it that without sounding lame, is a great community. happy i’m a part of it.
m1 platoon – we not them, part one [the mixtape].
i’ll give you an idea of how good m1 platoon is.
i sent this mixtape to people in an email before even posting it. meaning i didn’t care that they got it from my site. i just wanted them to hear m1. and i swear to god this joint is incredible. nothing sounds like this at all. if you appreciate GOOD HIP HOP, then m1 platoon should be in your iPod, iTunes, boombox, car stereo, and every other place you can jam some music.
you haven’t heard about these dudes? well, they’re a rack of homies (most of which are from DC. just throwing that out there) who go to school out in north carolina, and who happen to have 9th wonder, producer extraordinaire, as their professor. i’m not even lying. so with 9th as their mentor, imagine what kind of music they create. in fact, you don’t even have to imagine, because i got it all for you right here. featuring biz markie, carlitta durand, g5 clive, and savin. oh, and huge shout out to vaughn aka arafat yates, one of the rhymers/producers in the squad. one of the few guys who gets really excited about music in general. i respect those kind of cats out there. without further ado, i’m throwing you the mixtape, complete with taste tests.

and i honestly struggled giving you 3 samples, because there’s too many joints on this mixtape that are must-hears. i’ve never heard such improvement from one mixtape to another. lyrics, beats, overall cohesiveness. damn. THIS SHIT IS INSANE! i’ve never heard anything like it. that’s probably why they called this joint “we not them.” good grief. i’m hyped. everybody needs to enjoy this. and if my words didn’t move you to download this, then click the link and see how many people already have got it. that’ll probably move you a bit. ha. wzup scoopay, chopps, sean d, c4 black, napalm…i see all you guys.

g5 clive – summa of '88.

off his facebook note to the world:
The Summa of 88 is Here.. 2 Decades Lata.. Princes, Queens, Cocaine, Benzos, Reaganomics.. All Dat.. Bump Dis in Da Whip.. FULL BLAST! G5 Stay Live, Doin His Thang..
tru, tru. the last time i heard hip hop that sounded this good – beats, flows, and all – was when that M1 platoon: the invasion dropped. and maybe it’s because members from the platoon were involved in the project, but regardless, consider this an honorary blast off mixtape, except light years ahead of anything coming out soon.
this is a guy who sounds like nothing i’ve heard out of DC before – a step in a completely different direction. g5 aka murakami jr., paints a vivid picture of his hazy, day-to-day life. his second LP brings it back to the sweltering summer of 1988, presumably when a young clive first inhaled that city air and molded into the breezy infatuated, swag obsessed, tree smoking, rhyme slinging creature he is today. the introspective, thought provoking banter is balanced appropriately by the boasting, bragging, luccini type swag that most uptown roamers are born to preach about. i don’t think i’m alone when i say that the album evokes the charisma and flashes of brilliance similar to wu tang, circa ‘93 at times. the entire experience is one trippy daydream spent strolling along clive’s refreshingly imaginative mind.
beatmakers fundamental, mickey bizz, choc, and sinima lend a helping hand to g5 for the gritty and insanely out of this world production, but the majority is handled by dc’s own arafat yates, an m1 affiliate and 9th wonder protégé.
sample this joint.

“…so i suggest, you invest, in something that is real.”
