The style section’s Sunday cover was dedicated to the DMV hip hop movement. I think that’s something monumental. Figured I’d let everybody know in case they didn’t. Go dig through your recycling bin and get a copy. Post it on the wall or something. It’s progress.
RealMangoJuice.com and 1st Impressions Studios presents exclusive behind-the-scenes footage to Phil Ade’s (368 Music Group) first music video, “Hollywood”, directed by Tabi Bonney (Cool Kids Forever Films). HD cameras everywhere, so get ready for true high definition.
Looks like it’ll be something special. For Phil’s critically acclaimed mixtape, Starting on JV, go HERE. If you need more trill pictures from the shoot, check out No-Hypebeast and RMJ. Shout out to Dre and Phil, too. Finally met them at the Durkl party, real cool guys.

RA the MC is the only female rapper that I listen to regularly. Femcees, don’t be offended. In fact, I invite you to send music to the e-mail address listed, so I can hopefully add you to my iTunes rotation. For the time being, RA keeps it so thorough. Let’s get it. Look out for her mixtape, Trending Topic, coming soon. Like, real soon. I’ll throw it up when it drops. And if this joint doesn’t convince you, use the search bar up at the top to go get some old stuff I’ve put up by her.

Magnum Dollars is just so thorough, man. Bars upon bars upon bars. He’s one of my favorite rappers out of DC because his music always has some kind of worthwhile message behind it. His latest joint is over Jigga’s “D.O.A.”, and is a Derrion Albert tribute.
If you’re unfamiliar with the unfortunate situation that happened with Derrion Albert, whose fatal beating by a few teenagers was caught on video a few days ago, read more HERE.

one of my goals with this blog is to shed light on anything major going on in my area. durkl is an emerging streetwear brand that was founded a couple years ago and is beginning to take DC and the surrounding neighborhoods by storm. the combination of skater influence mixed with a cleaned-up, organized version of second-hand ’80s and ’90s threads is pretty cool if you ask me. there was a trill party a little over a week ago at the new durkl heardquarters, housed in a recently converted taxi garage. the ‘09 merchandise was on display, which features everything you need to make it through the fall season. house DJ chris burns was killing the jams while people were getting live tattoos (by adam’s morgan’s tattoo paradise), in-place bike racing, getting their drink on, and enjoying a swag bag of products, courtesy of durkl and the party’s sponsors. ALL FOR FREE! don’t believe me? check out my man ricky parker’s video footage below.
crazy, right? vimby TV was also in the builing. shout out to my man luke pierce, the man in charge of durkl’s operations, for having impeccable execution for durkl’s first party. check out the ‘09 lookbook over at durkl’s site.
it’s back. the trillest afrobeat mixtape series ever, dropping just in time for the coinciding afrobeat party hosted by the sexy ass ladies of LunchBox Theory on U street tomorrow, friday july 31st. DJ underdog still hittin’ ‘em with that live mix – no serato either, straight vinyl baby! wowzers.
not sure about what afrobeat is? well, here’s a definition:
Afrobeat is a combination of Yoruba music, jazz, highlife, and funkrhythms, fused with percussion and vocal styles, popularized in Africa in the 1970s. Its main creator was the Nigerian multi-instrumentalist and bandleaderFela Kuti who used it to revolutionise musical structure as well as the political context in his native Nigeria. It was Kuti who coined the term “afrobeat” upon his return from a U.S. tour with his group Nigeria 70 (formerly Koola Lobitos).
exactly. this is truly some special music, and i implore everybody to get on it, because it’s a pretty trill genre. we posted the first mixtape a few weeks ago; grab it HERE.
and the party is INCREDIBLE! AND ONLY $1! PLEASE COME OUT AND SUPPORT TONITE! I’LL EVEN GO WITH YOU IF YOU’RE NERVOUS TO SHOW UP SOLO! I’M NOT EVEN LYING!
the funniest comedian in the world to me. nobody does it like my man dave. and just when i really began to worry about his whereabouts, he pops up in portland, oregon for an impromptu show, advertised only by last-minute twitter updates and word-of-mouth. word on the street is, dave pulled in a gathering of thousands. MTV has more on the event here.
speaking of comedy, i’m anxious to see the talent that will be at the DC improv at the end of this month. for those who haven’t ever been there, the DC improv is the illest comedy club in DC. historic, even. you name them, and i bet they’ve performed in this modest-sized spot. kevin hart, donnell rawlings (better known as ashy larry from “chappelle show”), aries spears (MAD TV fame), charlie murphy and tommy davidson (from “in living color”) and many, many more are booked for gigs in the coming weeks.
for more info, check here. don’t sleep on comedy shows, they’re one of the best outings ever. better than bowling and mini golf combined, especially if they have cheap drinks. oh boy. i know i only named black comedians, but there are funny people of all creeds at this place! i just don’t know them as well. put me on if you know of any, if you know me, you know i get down with demetri martin and the late and great mitch hedberg.
not one to post about clothes, partially cuz i don’t want people to know what i’m about to get for myself, but also because i don’t feel like i have any right telling people what to wear. however, this is for a good cause.
the guys over at clockwise clothing have released a MJ tribute tee, with all proceeds going to The Childrens Defense Fund and their “Leave No Child Behind” act. for $22, this is a solid purchase.
offered in sizes S – 2XL. grab your own HERE, before they’re gone.
and this post wouldn’t be complete if i didn’t throw you something extra trill and exclusive. here are two michael jackson remixes of billy jean, both insane.
