You ever seen anybody beg for mercy like that on Facebook before? Sorry, Jordan. You kinda just put yourself all the way out there with that one. I accept your apology, but don’t ever question me when I give you music again.

This post wasn’t much, guys. I’m just working and stuff. Tryna get things moving. Thanks to everybody for the resumes you sent in; looking for more Final Cut champs; there’s a lot out there, but I want people who can designate their time and energy to my projects. I guarantee when you see what we’re working with, you’ll wanna rock with it. We got more access than a skeleton key, man. And if you don’t know how much access that is, you better read up on the Wikipedia definition.

As usual, I’d just like to thank you guys for staying on the boat during its unusually lengthy docking period. In a few weeks, it should convert into a fully-functioning ship. A spaceship, that is. Kinda like the joint in Overdoz‘ “Crumbling Therapy” video. Shout out to Ezekiel Phillips for directing this joint. Definitely one of the trillest videos I’ve seen all year. Watch.

Yep. Admit that was a pretty damn good blog post that you didn’t even expect to read all the way through like that.

Read it and weep. Let’s go. I know since Twitter Nation took over the world, I have people who are coming across this site with no previous knowledge as to what its purpose is. I figured I might as well take some time out to just break down DC to BC down.

It started as a college radio show at Boston College that me and my man Quinn (both of us hailing from the DC area and attending Boston College, of course) hosted twice a week, and expanded that into to a music-based blog that I decided to start one day. From jump, I made sure it wasn’t a regular music blog. I just talk about the stuff that catches my ear, or that my friends have put me onto. For example, I was the first blog to post J. Cole‘s music. I’m talking about the tape he put out before The Warm Up.. But that’s only because I used to intern with Aristotle at Def Jam (who, strangely enough, became my roommate in New York this year before I moved back to Maryland. He also directed every single Fabolous video that dropped this year. Crazy, right!?), who managed Cole before the Roc Nation stuff happened. He gave me the music, and since I liked it, I put it up. I don’t think anybody had blog posts about Christian Rich until I wrote about them, either. I could go on, but it’d be more boring than informative.

Music is cool and all, but I also like to write, so I threw in some writing pieces and editorials to make the site a little bit more unique. Truth be told, I love writing those pieces much more than just putting up music, because it’s my space to get creative with it. I also like to make people laugh, so anything that made me laugh out loud, I put on the blog.

Fast forward like two years or so. Somehow, DC to BC has grown into a tangible underground movement that has opened pretty much every door I’ve walked through, career-wise, since my Junior year of college. Complex, DrJays.com Live, and various other opportunities wouldn’t have happened if DC to BC didn’t exist, and I just realized that tonight. I started this site with no expectations, and it’s grown faster than one of those little foam things you used to get in goodie bags and you put in the water and the just blew up into huge foam creatures. I know you know what I’m talking about.

This summer, we decided to start throwing events and gatherings whenever possible. I’m not a promoter; I just like bringing great people together. Here’s some video footage of some of the things I’ve been lucky to be a part of / fool people into coming to:

The Gee Pee Cookout & Kick Back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3pRm0JSShY (Attendance: 400+)

Body Beat at The Donovan Hotel: http://vimeo.com/13445285 (250+)

Gathering @ Greenwood’s Crib: http://vimeo.com/14048167 (150+)

Child’s Play (A Field Day for Adults): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99hM3WaOte0 (150+)

I do it all because I love meeting great people through this community that was created almost by accident. Whether it’s online or in-person, it’s incredible. I enjoy the fact that I can get 140+ comments on a story about how I was swindled by a fat, homosexual man during my first week in New York, and that I can spark intense debate within the comment section on topics like why the the club isn’t the place for me, or my philosophy on buying a girl a drink.

I’m trying to figure out the next power move for DC to BC. I’d like it to be an entirely different experience. In this Web 2.0 world full of clever Tumblrs, prolific tweeters, and your typical blogs all doing somewhat of the same thing, I’ve gotta figure out a way to separate myself. I’d even prefer is the blog was secondary, almost as a complement to the “movement” that has been created. I’ve been working on a new project, but I don’t think it’s ready for the light of day. That’s why I’ve been so M.I.A. from this. But I think one thing that’ll help me figure out the next step is retracing my old ones. So this is the first step. I’m just gonna bring more of the same solid content until it’s time to really switch things up. Like always, thank you for rocking with me. I love you guys, for real. The fact that I got over 100 retweets (and that was just the RT button. We had some that were done using the manual retweet tactic, too.) makes me realize that there are people out there that rock with me as well. You never really know unless somebody tells you. The tweets told me so.

I’m going to sleep. It’s so late. Oh, and if you reached out to me for some DC to BC stickers…

…I sent those bad boys out in fashion. Threw in a business card, a couple trill adhesives, and a “Thank You” letter to those who reached out via Twitter/e-mail requesting these things. I licked so many envelopes that I thought I was gonna die like that guy from that episode of Seinfeld.

Let me know when you guys get ‘em in the mail and stuff. Special shout out to New Zealand and Canada, because I sent some joints out that way. I still think that’s ridiculous.

I was thinking earlier today, “Why doesn’t anybody get stung by bees anymore?” Like if you really think about it, you’ve gotta be doing something very, very wrong if you’re slow enough to get caught slipping by a bee. Why is that? Has evolution forced these buzzing bastards (that used to haunt me every time my jumper rimmed out and crash-landed into the bushes that housed their nests. Talk about vivid, dude.) into extinction? Are we just getting faster and these bees can’t keep up with our swiftness? Or has the world’s evolutions and man’s technology somehow crippled these guys indefinitely? Who knows.

One thing’s for sure, though. I’ve definitely been run up on a few wasps as of recent. I’m always shook. I’m the guy who will lose his marbles if a wasp flies by, and I’ve never known how to act. Luckily, my brother Ty Cody passed this nice little PSA over my way to inform me. I figured I’d share it with you, because otherwise, we’d both be S.O.L. Enjoy.

So next time you cross paths with one of these bad boys, you’ll know how to act.

You would have been 21 today, man. When I heard the news, I couldn’t even believe it. Both of you guys. I’ve been struggling to make sense of it since the night I found out. My only explanation is that everything happens for a reason, and I’m sure it’ll make sense to me eventually. It’s Thursday, so you already know that “F*ck You Thursday” will be in full effect all night like you used to do on Twitter. #FYT. I regret never taking your invitations to participate! Now I’m anxious to see what #FYT pop up in my timeline. One of the last things you ever said to me was, “I cordially invite you to participate in #FYT.” Ha! We miss you and Khalifah, man. A lot. I never really dealt with anything like this before, and I can’t even imagine how difficult this time is for everybody. That being said, Nasser, Majidah, and Haki are pretty strong about the whole thing. Your mother, too. I haven’t talked to your dad yet, but the pride with which he spoke about you and your brother on the news, it was amazing. You guys were special, really. I heard that they had to have the vigil and the funeral outside because so many people showed up. That’s the kind of effect you guys had on everybody, including me.

The Great Progression is dedicated to you and your brother. So believe that I’ll put every ounce of energy I have into making it something really awesome. I bet Khalifah’s prolly filming it all up there, but when he gets a second from those Final Cut Pro edits, tell him I say what’s up. I named my camera after him. I call that joint the Khalifah Cam. He’s part of the reason I got it. And I hope you’re still making some music up there. I remember the freestyle sessions in the old house! Encouraging me to write and stuff. It’s crazy how you don’t even realize everything that you’ve done with a person until you really sit back and think about the experiences and memories you shared. Even the little moments like running into you at Dave & Buster’s and you hooking me up with a good table and extra food or a charge card, man.

When I was over your crib, everybody was huddled around the computer watching the videos you and Lifah had. There’s so many. Hundreds! It’s amazing that even though you’re gone, we can bring you guys back to life for a few moments by pressing play. I gotta get over to the crib again to watch some more. I’m helping your mom and sister build the memorial site, and hopefully it’ll be up soon. I have a bunch of pictures from the cookout of you and Lifah aka Thug Funnie that I gave to Nasser last week. I know you saw the footage from it, too! Khalifah chopped it up pretty good.

I don’t even know what to say besides I miss you, man. I’m sure we’ll be reunited again in due time. Phatz, Fred Williams, Idris, whatever the name, you were great.

Rest In Peace Idris and Khalifah! Thank you to the people that came out to support and donate to their memorial fund and helped paid for the funeral. Everybody from our Sidwell family to people who didn’t know Idris or Khalifah at all, I appreciate you guys so much, and the Muhammad family appreciates it even more than me. If you’re interested in donating, hit me up via e-mail (modi[at]DCtoBC.com) and I will send you all the appropriate information so that you can help out.
A trill web designer/coder. I swear, I’ve found the best on the internet, but for some reason, things just don’t work out. From scheduling conflicts to conniving bastards trying to hit me with the okeydoke, I just keep getting rocked.

The guy I really want to do the honors is an incredibly busy man, and understandably so. I would put his twitter screen name here to have everybody hit him with an @[InsertNameHere] and persuade him to help me out, but I’d much rather him agree on it all on his own terms.

Oh, what am I up to, you ask? Still in New York City, grinding over at the Complex offices as an editorial intern, while writing posts for Dr. Jays Live. The two big things that I can say I’m proud of (and that have my name on them, unlike other work I’ve done. And that’s not a jab, that’s just how it is. All the right people who need to know what you worked on will know. I’m essentially just saying that hard work pays off.) are the Mike Posner interview i did in March and the Big Sean interview I did in April. Check ‘em out if you get the chance, and thanks to those who had a moment to read them. I appreciate it greatly.

So like I said, it’s a web designer away from being in motion. September launch regardless though. @TheGeePee – follow when you get a chance. Thanks!

Sike. I don’t even talk like that. But really, the site should be done shortly. I had to do a few much needed shifts in terms of people behind the scenes, but everything is coming together smoother than a baby’s bottom. I told you, until we get 1,000 Twitter followers (and 1,000 Facebook Fans, but we can do that in a couple days I think. If you wanna help, just suggest your friends to join the Fan Page. Thanks a lot!), this joint isn’t going live. So it’s really all on you guys. Pressure? Kind of. But it’s not like you can’t take it.

I appreciate anybody who still rocks with me. It’s been a hell of a journey. Running into people everywhere that don’t even know me but know the site is one of the greatest things in the world. Having discussions about blog posts I wrote in ’08 and how they changed people’s ways of thinking isn’t anything I ever thought could happen, but it did. It does. It will hopefully continue to be that way with this new stuff. These “coming soon” posts suck. A lot. I’d rather make you laugh and stuff, so why don’t we do that right about now. Watch the video below, and pay special attention to what happens around 56 seconds deep.It is literally the most ridiculous thing I’ve seen in 2010.

Tomfoolery at its finest. But yeah, writers, PR people, graphic designers, all those guys, we need you. Hit me up.

Everything came out epic, as you can see. Huge shouts out to Kerri and Chris from CtotheJL.com for making this happen, as well as my Madbury Club bruv Phil for linking me with a guy who was so busy, I thought he was giving me the cold shouler. After I met the man, I understand why Chris is so hard to reach; he’s honestly one of the hardest people I’ve met in my journey to achieving whatever it is I’ll end up achieving.

I got hella stories and trill footage from SXSW, but with all these things going on at the moment, I have no time to get anything done! I wish I had an intern. But alas, I am an intern. And honestly, I don’t need an intern at all. I just need to stop playing my roommate in Fifa and 2K10 until 2am. Then I’ll have some time to do the stuff I’m supposed to be doing.

Ha. Shout out to anybody who still reads this site. I’m still making a little ad money, so there’s gotta be some people out there that keep coming back. I appreciate your loyalty. The Great Progression coming soon. Had a little change of direction with the concept and design, but like Dom Kennedy said, “I don’t talk about it much, I’d rather just prove it.” So enough chit-chat. All I’m gonna keep on saying is that it’s coming soon, and when it finally drops, it’ll be well worth the wait.

DC is so much triller than NYC, by the way. That got about 50 retweets yesterday, and made a few NYers shed some tears too. But it’s the truth. I’m gonna be back there sooner than I expected, I can feel it. @DCtoBC and @TheGeePee, just follow those Twitter accounts for me. Thanks.

From 12 pm to 6pm on Friday, March 19th, DC to BC and The Great Progression, along with several other fine organizations, will be hosting Quality!, a South By Southwest showcase in Austin, TX. How did this all happen? If you’re interested, you better read on.

Several years ago, probably in either late high school or early college, I was put on to a remarkable boutique music blog by the name of Blind I For The Kids. Headed by music buff Suli, or $ as he goes by on the internets, Blind I has been hipping me to the vast majority of the eclectic jams I’ve had in rotation. Every other rarity and B-side in my 22,000+ patchwork collection of legally and illegally acquired music has been downloaded from Blind I. They were the biggest inspiration in starting this site that you see today, providing support and motivation while I tried my hand at building a safehaven where people could revel in music, trillness, and tomfoolery.

Almost two weeks ago, Suli reached out to me and said, “Modi, you tryna do a showcase at South By Southwest with me?” I thought it was a joke. As you can see by the flyer, it wasn’t a joke at all. 10 or so later, I got my $#!t together. The wonderful team behind Blind I (especially Noah, Maiya, and $) obviously gave this endeavor much thought before I was involved, from gathering sponsors to finding the acts, from securing the venue to getting the little intangibles dealt with. I’m honored to be a part of this experience, and it’ll be a journey. If you’re interested in following it all, follow @DCtoBC (me) or @QualitySXSW on Twitter. Below is a nice little summary of exactly what’s going on.

We present to you “QUALITY,” an eclectic progressive musical display showcasing some of the best and brightest in 2010’s new musical landscape. Hosted by the tastemakers of Blind I and DC to BC / The Great
Progression, “QUALITY!” aims to provide the community of burgeoning talent that Blind I, DC to BC, and The Great Progression promotes virally with a visual showcase during the famed South by Southwest (SXSW) week.

DATE: Friday, March 19th, 2010
LOCATION: Soho Lounge (217 E. 6th Street, Austin, TX)
Expected Attendance: 600+ (600 people!? My goodness!)

Performances by: Theo Martins, Vandalyzm, Classy Hand Favours, TiRon, The Paxtons, KJ, Project Mayhem, Mic Terror, Black Spade, Brittany Street, Bad Rabbits, Phil Ade, U-N-I, Kinky Notti, Tabi Bonney, Brittany Bosco, Peter Hadar, Sulaiman, YP, Big Homie Doe, Rockwell Knuckles, House Shoes, BBU, Coultrain, L.E., Pugs Atomz, and some special guests.

Yeah, and if all those names didn’t ring too many bells (and some should, but some shouldn’t, because it’s a showcase. It’s where relatively known and unknown artists give you a reason to check for them in the future.), we’ve done you a favor and compiled a smooth sampler mixtape to prepare you for what you’re about to see, or for you to live through vicariously if you can’t make it to Austin for the weekend. Click artwork or the link below that to download!

In other news, I’m still working on The Great Progression. It’s all in the designer’s hands now, because my work is basically complete. Stay up to date with the movement via Twitter: @TheGeePee. Oh, and me too (@DCtoBC). I know I always say it, but thanks for the support. Thanks for all you guys who grabbed the S.A.D. #2 as well; we did over 2,000 downloads total, and with no real promotional push besides some vicious word of mouth and a couple of blogs that I really f*ck with posting it. Thanks again for all that.

The Great Progression. Coming shortly, I promise.
