netflix watchnow What Should I Get On Netflix?

I know this is borderline abusing my privileges as the owner of this site. but i just re-subscribed to NetFlix after grabbing this PlayStation3, and I’m itching to put 10 solid movies that I can abuse on the MacBook and the new Vizio during my downtime.

If you’d be so kind, just leave suggestions and brief synopses of movies (if they aren’t typical joints that everybody and their grandma’s heard of). Everybody can add something to this list, so just throw the suggestions out there. Maybe we’ll have a nice little dialogue pertaining to movies and such. Ha. Thanks! and i like it all, so don’t think i won’t consider musicals, documentaries, foreign films. actually, fuck a foreign film. i have no time for subtitles.

Let the games begin. Oh, and those who don’t believe that The Great Progression is upon us, more sneak peaks:

The Gee Pee What Should I Get On Netflix?

Yeah. Like I said before, stay in the loop via Twitter, @TheGeePee and @DCtoBC.

Anyway, movies. Let’s get it.

I think you should check out Choke. It’s acomedy about this sex-addicted con artist who pays for his mother’s hospital bills by taking advantage of the people who save him from choking to death…

Also, one of my FAVORITES, The Darjeeling Limited… If you liked The Royal Tennenbaums and other Wes Anderson Films, you will love this one…

If you like old movies… try rear window… It doesnt get better than Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly

And last but not least… Across the Universe if you feel like singing Beatles covers and tripping out

Comment by Nolisudan 11.18.08 @ 12:30 am

def agree…

- eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
- donnie darko
- royal tenenbaums or bottle rocket (if you have already seen tenenbaums)

foreign:

- amores perros

- The Signal (2007)
- Special (2006)
- Perfume The Story of a Murderer (2006)

Comment by Landmine 11.18.08 @ 2:42 am

I would recommend old school movies starting with Bonnie and Clyde, then maybe Raging Bull (De Niro), On the Waterfront (Marlon Brando), mentionned earlier: a complete history of my sexual failures. Control, the movie about Joy Division.

An absolute must watch and one of my favourite movies: Ghost Dog!!!!!

Comment by andre 11.18.08 @ 8:48 am

I second Raging Bull and On the Waterfront (“I coulda been a contender!”)…
If you watch Raging Bull, try comparing it to Rocky…. it will really make you think… go film students!

The Machinist, The Fall, Layer Cake, When Harry Met Sally, Casablanca, Pan’s Labyrinth , Ed Wood, The Neverending Story (baccccckkkk throwww), The Orphanage, Darkman (throw baaccck), Closer, August, Clockers…I could go on and on.

Basically a cornucopia of genres. I, myself will be having a wonderful all-day movie marathon…I’m looking forward to it. Now, all I need is a snuggie (as seen on TV) and some Krispy Kreme donuts.

I had to narrow down my list, but if I had to pick 10 solids that I feel like should leave you in jaw-dropping awe or a state of existential reflection in some form or fashion:

8.5 (I couldn’t get through it…but a lot of people like it)

25th Hour (one of spike’s best, a classic that gets no love)
Bamboozled (if you haven’t seen it already)
Blade Runner (nice 80s future-noir shit)
Chinatown (dope ass day-time noir, jack at his best)
City of God (ultra-dope)
Full Metal Jacket (ultra-dope, mind-fuck)
JFK (an ultra-dope, political mind-fuck with some of the best editing in cinema history, prolly oliver stone’s best)
No Country for Old Men (dope in just about every way a movie can be)
On the Waterfront (classically dope)…compare with cool hand luke
Requiem for a Dream (dope in a way that makes u wanna not do anything for the rest of the day)
There Will Be Blood (just…ridiculously dope)

Dope Ass Runners-Up:

Battle of Algiers – historically dope
Big Lebowski – languidly dope
Dr. Strangelove – satirically dope
Mo’ Better Blues – the movie that made denzel denzel
Se7en – buddy cop, grisly murder dope

Dope Directors:

kubrick – dr. strangelove, 2001, a clockwork orange, the shining, barry lyndon
coppola – the godfather, the conversation, apocalypse now,
scorsese – goodfellas, taxi driver, raging bull
fincher – fight club, se7en, zodiac
the coens – the big lebowski, raising arizona, barton fink
spike – mo’ better blues, she’s gotta have it, do the right thing, bamboozled,
innaritu – amores perros, babel, 21 grams
soderbergh – traffic, the limey, sex lies and videotape

dope ass movies in general:

akeelah and the bee
amadeus (someone suggested…is boss)
battle of algiers
clerks
coffee and cigarettes
cool hand luke
dead presidents
dirty pretty things
eastern promises
the fountain
the graduate
the kingdom
the machinist
memento
midnight cowboy
pulp fiction
sicko
snatch
touch of evil
usual suspects

some docs:

grizzly man
hoop dreams
omar and pete (if u can get ur hands on it)
sicko
when the levees broke
why we fight

Then of Course, There’s Always “The Wire,”

tahir, your list is fucking incredible. we may need to have an IM convo about the joints i’ve seen and joints i want to see. and such.

Comment by Jesus 11.18.08 @ 8:27 pm

lol thanks and perhaps we should.

my own netflix queue is gigantic but i unfortunately have not gotten a chance to watch a rental in several weeks. caught zack and miri over the weekend…really wanted to see quantum of solace, but people were fakin…think i’mma have to check it out this week…

the director thing means a lot coming from you, sir modi. i am just a mere man that watches lots of movies and makes annoying comments about things that no one cares about/has little point of reference for afterwards. occasionally i’ll make a spoof or two, maybe a short. speaking of which, any intel on the blueprint 3? i’m tryna keep my eyes out for the next pharrell/jay collab to spoof.

Comment by Tjett 11.18.08 @ 9:49 pm

If you haven’t seen “Hoop Dreams” watch it. Great documentary about two kids growing up in Chicago wanting to make it to the NBA.

I’d second the “Dr. Strangelove” I saw out there somewhere, funny shit, and I don’t normally like Kubrick.

Classic Spike Lee in “Do the Right Thing”

And for Christmas, “Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” if you haven’t seen it. It’s Guy Ritchie film and felt like I had to through a little love his way after seeing his ass get trashed by Madonna all over the place.

Comment by JR 11.23.08 @ 1:07 pm

Tjetts list was inssane.

I cosign reading’s nomination of Layercake. Def don’t think it gets enough recognition. You understand why Daniel Craig makes such a dope Bond.

Hurricane Season – based on a true story about a New Orleans HS basketball team playing despite the aftermath of Katrina. Lil Wayne had a minor role, and I believe funded the movie. No joke one of the best feel-good sports movies I’ve seen.

Talk to Me – story of Petey Greene (Don Cheadle)

District 9 – Best movie of ’09. Worth watching multiple times to see how accurately detailed the whole thing is.

V for Vendetta – Elite in cinema history as far as political commentary goes.

City of God – Agreed on this one. Just, wow.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – LONG…but interesting. Great commentary on the circle of life…the FULL circle…

Tyson – Documentary on Mike Tyson. All I can say is go into it with an open mind.

That’s all I got off the top of my head

Comment by MookieDC 02.17.10 @ 9:34 pm

Dang, Modi.

when I recently moved back home, I would watch a new movie almost every night… there is too freakin’ many to list all in all, but here are a few interesting movies which you might not think of immediately, but that I think you would really like and that I’ve watched recently:

1. The Birds … Classic Hitchcock and plenty of his movies are available to watch instantly online on netflix as well. Quality entertainment, led the way for contemporary horror/mystery film.

2. The Dreamers. The Dreamers is about a college student who goes to study in France and meets this set of twins- a boy and girl who take him on a journey: sexually, politically, artistically.

3. Before Sunset. The sequel to After Sunrise (but don’t need to watch both unless you want)… Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy reprise their roles nine years later as they “meet again” and have a second shot at love. I think you’d like it, based on how much I know you liked 500 Days. Extremely honest and witty.

4. Brick – Here’s what they say on netflix:

When a secret crush turns up dead and the murderer is anyone’s guess, teenage loner Brendan Fry (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is forced to navigate his school’s social network through intense interactions with thespians, band geeks and druggies (including a grown-up Lukas Haas). This unconventional film noir marked a promising debut for writer-director Rian Johnson, picking up a Special Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.

5. Go ahead and watch the whole season one of Californication. Hank Moody is a writer, a woman whisperer, a father, and still he is in love. This show has it all. They have it available to rent or to watch instantly. It is classic, and simply a great show I recommend to everyone. Guaranteed satisfaction.

Comment by KrayzieYugo 02.26.10 @ 6:46 pm

This would be a lot easier if you would list some of your favorite films and maybe some themes you enjoy. But whatever the case, you can peep my 51 Best Films of The Decade List (which is severely flawed and needs to be redone but whatever) on my blog.

I will say this to all aspiring film buffs; its the directors who are the auteurs. I don’t totally subscribe to Auteurs Theory but I do think it rings true for the most part. If you can think of a number of films you like, and notice some of them are from the same director, then I suggest going through that director’s catalog.
