wale leaked a new, incomplete joint on twitter today. and sure, you can get it from other sites as just any old download, or you can get the story behind why this song is huge. oh, you want that story!? let’s get it then.
ok, so back in the 70’s and 80’s, when nigeria caught disco fever, like the rest of the world, there was a disco / afrobeat / whatever-you-wanna categorize-it-as artist named bunny mack. he came out with a few albums, and was pretty popular, but his most popular hit was this song called “My Sweety, My Sugar (Let Me Love You)”. hear it below:

now, what my nigerian brother from another has done is brought the classic nigerian disco tune from ‘79 into the ‘09 with the help of chapel hill native the apple juice kid (this guy’s production is official. i remember DL’ing a mixtape of sorts back in the day and it blew me away. look out for him!). the reason that i think this joint is tight (besides the fact that it goes) is because it appeals to the african youth that live vicariously through their parents and through the classic jams that play at cookouts, weddings, and birthday parties. it brings together two worlds, and regardless of whether or not wale did this consciously, it was genius. the DJs in lagos are about to have a ball with this one.
