the left coast isn’t dormant, but it’s not live like my coast. i mean, let’s be real for a second. dre is taking forever to release detox, and snoop on chill mode as of recent. game is bipolar and slightly schizo (read: the man is insane, most definitely.), and i’m starting to believe his rise to stardom was a huge fluke.
in my eyes, nipsey hussle is the only guy who can bring the west coast’s mainstream / gangsta rap game back to where it was at back in the days of tupac and them. is the statement bold? hell yeah – i may even have OG’s berating me in the comment section in a little bit. no matter. i haven’t heard tenacity like this in a west coast rapper since old ice cube. i don’t even get down with that hood stuff for the most part, but i make a few exceptions, and this is one. plus, he looks like he is snoop’s little brother. and his family’s east african (ethiopia or eritirean. i’ll bet anything.), so he just is gaining all sorts of points over here. enjoy this west coast vibe track, and spread the good word.

Outrageous claims against the Best Coast. San Quinn holds the record for selling the most CDs out of a car trunk in one day- he would have gone triple platinum if record execs were paying attention. Then you’ve got San Diego’s finest, Mitchy Slick, single-handedly holding the entire region between Mexico and LA down like E-40 did Sacramento and Vallejo in the 90s (back then Biggie had to kiss E’s ring before he could get permission to do shows in Sacto). You saying Nipsey Hussle is all we got? I guarantee you have tried to ghost ride it, in which case you can thank Mista Fab. For real though if you want to talk boutique hip-hop we got Peanut Butter Wolf doin his thing out there in San Jose producing all kinds of shit for Stones Throw, we got Hieroglyphics alums like Del and Pep Love…you want gangsta we can take you to Fillmore for Ya Boy and Andre Nickatina…keep your eyes peeled for The Jacka too (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5N91D4FWyg&feature=channel). But you know, like you said, not as much going on as the East Coast…

damn, i see what you’re saying. i meant more of the gangsta rap. the hyphy movement is a different movement in itself. music evolves, and ppl like e-40, who were part of other movements, helped create a new one. you know? i know about the other guys, but i meant more traditional west coast hip hop. but then again, what is traditional?
thank you for schooling me in a polite yet thorough manner. that’s how i like to have convo on music. put me on in a way that’ll make me wanna jam these other artists. great look.
Comment by modi 07.13.09 @ 5:39 pmi wouldn’t compare nipsey to classic cube AT ALL. he’s way too laid back. cube rapped with an urgency not seen amongst west coast rappers, hell any rapper, since…well….classic ice cube. lol.
i would rank nipsey below knoc’turnal amongst west coast rappers. i’d rather bump blu, pacific division, mitchy slick, i’d even put glasses malone over nipsey. i don’t get the hype at all. he sounds like an average socal g-rapper. he could have been in south central cartel and fit right in. not bad, just average.
Comment by spiritequality 07.13.09 @ 9:01 pmps: could someone point me to nipsey’s best song? i’m more than willing to admit when i sleep on a great artist. this particular song didn’t do much for me. nor have the other nipsey songs i have heard on his myspace (the titles to which i forget)
Comment by spiritequality 07.13.09 @ 9:03 pmi just like his charisma. he is young, but he got time to grow a bit. he’s relatively new to the limelight, i just feel like he’ll grow exponentially. he’s not the best, but he just has the most potential in my eyes to change the way people look at the west.
it’s like chris wilcox. he got drafted the earliest out of all the trill ass players on maryland the year they won the ’ship because he had the most potential as an NBA player.
