ooooooooooh weeeeeeeeee! friday and saturday nights. what is more exciting than the weekends? virtually everybody could count on the weekend to be a much-needed break from something that you weren’t too fond of; no more notes or homework for the kiddies, and no more memos and faxes for the grown folk. back in like ‘94-’95, i was like 8 or 9. weekend power moves were limited to a friend’s houses for a sleepover, and maybe some video games. but to me, the real treat was watching the tube.

when did the tube not hold you down!? it was like a best friend almost; you never had to worry about backstabbing or betrayal, because in the end it’d always be there for you. we got especially tight on the weekends from 8-10. it was these 2-hour blocks of phenomenal TV on two channels (ABC & nickelodeon, on friday and saturday respectively) that had my eyes glued to that big ol’ box. you couldn’t change that channel, either.  over my dead body.

best shows ever included in TGIF lineup:

- family matters (who didn’t love to hate urkel?)

- boy meets world (topanga was hotter than the sun’s core, ’nuff said.)

- step by step (this was the show you watched just because it was in the lineup. at least to me. cody was cool though.)

- hangin’ with mr. cooper (two black shows in 2 hours! incredible. oakland!)

- sabrina the teenage witch (2.5 times cooler than the character melissa joan-hart played in “clarissa”, right?)

best shows ever included in the SNICK lineup:

- clarissa explains it all (i know i just dissed this show a little bit. but truthfully, it was great. her homie who came through the window with the ladder was pretty cool. he never made a move though. after all those years? come on, dude. oh, and her little brother ferguson was certifiably insane. his name was ferguson. good grief.)

- roundhouse (what was hipper than this!? break dancers!? actors? fast moving scenes that were filmed live in a dangerously cool-looking warehouse. talk about cutting edge.)

- all that (kenan, kel, and lori beth denberg were the funniest things on TV by far. from repair man to pierre escargot, you really couldn’t beat those guys.)

- are you afraid of the dark (this is one of those joints that left me shook afterwards. slept with the lights on and closet open ever since watching this.)

*     *     *

i hope i took you down a serious memory lane. now i need you to let me know which joint is better. take the poll, and hit the comments section.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

You just can’t pick between the two. There were classic shows on both channels. I think because of my age I probably watched snick more, but both were quality, You remember the show Dinosaurs on TGIF? loved it. And Alex Mack, Rugrats, Kennan & Kel…smh. SNICK shows were the business too. I’m in the middle.

SNICK had an orange couch though. can you beat that? i don’t think so.

but, TGIF had a whole rack of black shows before black shows were in abundance. and this was on primetime TV, no less. hmm…this is a difficult one. still going for snick. kel gave me my sense of humor. kenan too.

SNICK > TGIF.
although TGIF was holdin it down with all the Black shows.
snick just had kids waaayyy more crunk.
parents didn’t get it.

Hangin with Mr. Cooper is the X factor that gives TGIF the easy W. I dont think any single shows stands out as distinctly in my mind as when Coop gets a ten day contract for the Warriors. That episode made me who I am today.

For Mibby:
SNICK will forever reign supreme coming from an 80’s babie who was immerred in both. TGIF was good up until the meaning changed from Thank God Its Friday to Thank Goodness ITs Funny. Cause when the spirituality left the watering down of the shows happened. Family matters went into the Stephan era and Full House had lost its steam. Step by Step was cool at first but then fizzled. As for SNICK I was a dedicated fan. when 8 o clock would hit we’d all rush inside to see “Clarissa Explains It All”, “The Ren and Stimpy Show” & “Are You Afraid of The Dark” and all the other hits they had. Real talk Uncle Jesse loses…I always liked the Fonz better anyway.

Ayyyyy!!!!!

lol. @ Goat I feel you, I think that SNICK’s strength came from having so many shows…but Hanging w/ Coop and family matters, I can’t even try and pick between the two. However, I think we all can agree that TV just isn’t what it used to be.

& @ Modi hahaha. I loved that couch!

Ha Ha I just tied it Everyone had 6 votes each, I went with TGIF, Boy Meets world was a classic

Comment by Joe D. aka DJ~JD 06.02.09 @ 12:46 pm

boy meets world was actually the best show out of all of them. if i could make my own power night for TV, it’d be fresh prince, family guy, the office, and wonder years. maybe adding chappelle for even more comedy and boy meets world for that grown world aspect. i loved principal feeny. he was too nice with it. beat those shows.

Don’t get me wrong, i LOVED TGIF… well, until the last few years when it got kinda boring – it just wasn’t the same when they were ALL grown up on BOY MEETS WORLD… and tho I do love Sabrina… Clarissa is a much cooler character… and I gotta give props to Boy Meets World for Shawn having a black girlfriend… that in itself was kinda progressive for an all-white ABC primetime family comedy…

BUT i’m sorry… the fact that SNICK had Are You Afriad of The Dark… that ALONE is why Snick beats TGIF in my book – that show is CLASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSIC…. still watch it on youtube…

and don’t forget that ALL THAT was pretty urban show itself… TLC did the theme song… and all their music performances were on point with rappers, R&B groups, R&B singers etc… ALL THAT was like the urban, kid’s version of SNL… before Mad TV… real talk

OH YEAH – and Hanging With Mr Cooper was my shit… i loved that Raven Symone was on it – bc i used to love her as little olivia on Cosby…

and also I remember Raven’s character had a Mariah ‘Butterfly’ album poster in her room – and at that time MC’s ‘Butterfly’ album was my SHIT… in fact, still is… LOL

damn 1998 – over 10 years ago?! DAMNNNN!

Nothing can touch Boy Meets World. Those episodes were sad, hilarious, dramatic, shocking, just EVERYTHING. Gotta go with TGIF…

PLUS, the TGIF theme songs ROCKED the SNICK theme songs… with the ONE exception of All That…

See i wasn’t privileged enough to have cable and watch SNICK weekly. I got to see it sometimes but All That was my shit. I used to catch the reruns during the weekdays or any time i was at my cousin’s house or something. With that said, i must go with TGIF mainly because Boy Meets World was one of the best shows on TV at the time. Eric Matthews and Mr Feeney conversations were ‘crucial’ as Modi would say haha. On top of that you have Laura Winslow and Urkel’s other girl (who was actually bad in a weird way), and Hangin Wit Mr Cooper? amazing. TGIF FTW

TGIF was my shit cuz I didnt have cable when I was younger haha. It was all about what I could get on the antenna, yezzir!

Comment by RecruitZero-SR 06.02.09 @ 7:46 pm

No cable..TGIF was all that I had..And to the first post I remember Dinosaurs like it was yesterday… “Not the mama!!”

Comment by Ricky 06.02.09 @ 10:39 pm

im bout to come in all off topic but eff it: nickelodeon had the ill sunday afternoon line-up also. the adventures of pete and pete; come on, 2 brothers named pete, and the youngest had a tattoo that could dance! not to mention hey dude and salute your shorts! come on!! then the icing on the cake: my brother and me! OMG! (and i dont even use blog/i.m. jargon but it is warranted here, LOL) that kool dr. money haircut is epic! “alfey, can you teach me to dance?”, OMG!

Comment by eddie limo 06.03.09 @ 6:20 pm

Honestly I loved them both but my family didn’t get cable until I had already been watching TGIF for years. I started watching snick in the last years of its good run, and of course TGIF wasn’t so good at the end but I literally grew up with it. Kenan and Kel, All That, and Allen Strange were all great shows that I loved along with others. Still Step by Step, Family Matters, Where I Live, Hanging with Coop, Sabrina, Dinosaurs… should I go on?
