i have no idea when this footage is from. i do know, however, that he’s talking on westwood radio. tim westwood sounds so damn lame. british people that sound as proper as westwood just shouldn’t ever do interviews with DMX.

back to X, though. he sounds so NY/baltimore. and like a deranged preacher. he’s insane though. BUT HE’S MAKING SO MUCH SENSE! that’s not even drugs talking. he’s just crazy. and one of the best MC’s in my lifetime. i’m 22, so do the research and come up with better rappers. first three albums were classics in my book, and the fourth had like 3 gems on it.

3:45, westwood sounds dumb as rocks. “i mean let’s not front. you roll crew deep.” WTF is that!? LOL. LOLOL. goodness. this is officially tomfoolery.

co-sign the fact that westwood is a CLOWN, why has he consistently maintained his position for so many years? and why do so many rappers give him the time of day??? I’m as baffled as you are. And I feel bad for X gon give it to ya, but top 5? mmmm…nah.

modi ur right on the top 5 thing. jadakiss compared to DMX!!! come on now. dmx has sold over 30 millions albums worldwide, and not because he sniffs caffeine pills or knocks niggas out, but b/c hes real. arguably the realest nigga in the game. a lyrical MONSTER. jadakiss is a punchline rapper. dmx punches rappers lol. people needta do their research and ull discover why hes still around today. like he say real recognize real and dmx will be here for as long as he wants to. hes that good. check the games intro for lax. dmx is one of the best ever to do it. and yea he might be on drugs but so is weezy. and on the video he jus look angry ta me, as he shud be cuz theres alot of shit behind the scenes in the music industry that cud make a nigga that way. homo thugs like weezy for one. dmx has always been underrated by the mainstream but real niggas kno. do ur research guys.

the only reason any of that sounds crazy is because x is a millionaire and has a lot to lose versus any number of dudes on street corners from dc to nyc who talk and walk it the exact way but have nothing to lose at all.

x has a lot of heart. i wish he had a team that could structure opportunities for him because he has talent and he has that fire in his eye, he just doesn’t really have a machine around him like he did at def jam circa 99.

i feel like i know exactly who he was talking about with the chicago reference, but i’m not going to say it since he didn’t.

Comment by spirit equality 12.05.08 @ 11:25 pm

ps: please show some respect to tim westwood, he’s done a lot for hip-hop culture in the UK. he’s like 20 years deep over there and although he receives about the same about of hate that flex does in nyc, both flex and tim westwood have paid a LOT of dues and broken a LOT of great records over the course of their careers. yeah, there are points you can criticize, but respect their legacies.

(i threw flex up there because westwood is regularly paralleled with flex and is essentially the flex of the UK)

DMX is one bad ass dude. For anyone who hasn’t seen Belly yet go right now and buy it because you will watch it like ten times easy.

Comment by Boston Knucklehead 12.06.08 @ 12:08 pm

I don’t give a fuck what NOBODY says
DMX is the shit and the realest
I’d support all his motherfucking singles
He’s my favorite fo-sho
What makes him great is he isn’t like everybody else and he wont let people play with his intelligence.

Damn I love DMX

Comment by McNerd 12.06.08 @ 3:00 pm

Come on guys lets be rational here, DMX is not the best rapper of this generation. He is good, he is really good, but not the best. If you want a name I’ll throw out Nas.

P.S. DMX is batshit insane.

Comment by Mo 12.06.08 @ 5:38 pm

X > Jada? really now?

honestly X got a few tracks that are good but his problem is he dropped two of the same damn albums in a row. listening to his last two albums was like listening to a double album that covered the same thing! he was nice. he was definitely one of the best. and the reason he sold 30 mil is cuz his style and delivery was so unique. not cuz of skill. i agree he’s a real ass dude. and he’s very smart. but i can listen to a jada track and respect it lyrically before i could an X track.

one thing i will admit to, is that the first time i heard the Who We Be track, i thought dude was going insane. but he was talking about some real ass shit aside from the “the lawnmower, is sittin, RIGHT NEXT, to the tree!” line

Comment by CV to BC? 12.07.08 @ 2:18 am

ta say dmx only sold 30 mil WORLDWIDE jus b/c he was “different” is absurd. u dont sell millions of records ta people overseas because your different. in that case pharrell (no disrespect modi lol), amongst other “different” rappers would hav the same success. not the case. DMX makes hits, jadakiss doesnt. and when i say “hits” i mean top 40 billboard hits. not 106 n park hits. jay-z hits not memphis bleek hits.

and think abt this.. who was their ta sign jada when bad boy cudnt find a market for him. hmmm… DMX!!! ruffryders!!! in the words of kanye (“i was like bad boy street team, i cudnt work the lox, now lets gooo….) lol

and ta say jadakiss is more lyrical than dmx is also a non-educated statement. Check out the Backstage Tour movie where DMX is freestylin against jay-z. Nuff said.

jada.. top 5 dead or alive??? not by a long shot.. he’s got alot of ppl gassed up lol

Comment by g5 muthafuckin clive 12.08.08 @ 12:50 am

lol Jada is definitely more lyrical than dmx. its not a question. dmx is definitely the only rapper of his kind. his sound is so much different than everyone else’s. the bulk of his sales didn’t come off of his lyrical skill. it was off his style. you think the lyrics ‘i got blood on my dick cuz i fucked a corpse’ is gonna sell millions?
yo if i knew he said that when that song came out? i wouldn’t have bought Flesh of My Flesh lol.
that man is absurd, and his appeal came from his unique style. its the truth. his lyrical skill wasn’t top notch either.
yall really frontin on jada. just cuz he signed him doesn’t mean he was a better rapper. thats an uneducated assumption. he had the money to sign him. does that mean he’s a better rapper? noo…
is Kanye a better rapper than Common? nope. did he sign him? yup.
Diddy signed BIG. in no way was he a better rapper, am i right?
its nothing to go off of really.

Jada > DMX
its not as unreasonable as yall makin it out to be.
DMX is a great rapper because of his delivery n flow. not cuz of lyricism. he sounds so different on a beat. if anyone else dropped some of the lines he did, ya’ll prolly woulda dubbed em wack lol. he be sayin some nonsense…
but he had some DOPE ass tracks. like “Damien”? that track was INSANE. “Let Me Fly” is one of my favorite tracks to this day. as a matter of fact, the whole Its Dark and Hell is Hot album is one of my favorites ever. but it ain’t off lyricism.
X had one of the most unique and best deliveries in the game. he could really say anything and get away with it. dude was so fuckin gangsta any type of criticism he woulda bit your head off lol.

Comment by CV to BC? 12.08.08 @ 4:42 am

nah, i’m sorry. as an artist, X > jada. it’s not about the lyrics. it’s about your appeal. there are rappers, and within that category, there are wack, ok, good, and great. then there are characters. that means that in addition to their rap skills, they offer so much more. his raspy ass voice that fluctuates in volume like a ghetto preacher. his crazy fascination with dogs. he barked on tracks, for christ’s sake. remember that tattoo on his back that says “BOOMER”? it was for his dog that died, from what i remember.

X’s album covers alone put him in front of people. he was in a bath full of BLOOD for his second album! who does that!? his concepts were wild. his internal struggle that he portrays through his music is unique and like a movie of sorts. and he’s just one true ass dude who lost his way. he needs to jam his own music and get himself on the right path back to where he used to be. and if he doesn’t reach that, at least to sanity. or maybe he never was sane? the thing i’m tryna say is that he is a much cooler artist than jada. jada stays relevant because he is one of the best punchline rappers alive, and his rhymes are just so potent and hard hitting. but what hits has he had that you can name? my mother can sing some DMX songs (hooks at least, i bet) but if i said jadakiss, she’d be confused. that’s why dmx was able to get to the mainstream. because he is a character. if i wanted to type more, i could break down why wayne is in a similar boat in terms of being a character.

Comment by modi 12.08.08 @ 5:08 am

if he start listening to his old music hell go crazy again.

ok i guess i see the point, i wasn’t comparing them as overall artists because i just haven’t seen DMX as relevant in the past 3 or 4 years. i think whats holding me back from giving him the edge is that he fell off so hard. he used to be my favorite rapper way back. then he dropped the grand champ and year of the dog..again and they didn’t sound different at all lol.

Jada hasn’t been droppin hits, but he’s not a multiplatinum artist like DMX. the reason is DMX has a gimmick that he carries with him. im using the word gimmick for a lack of better words, cuz i know thats actually who he is, and not an act he’s putting on for sales, but i think him as a person might seem intriguing…moreso than him as an artist. the appeal comes from outside of his content itself, which holds me back from giving him such an edge.

i see what you’re saying, but i’m gonna have to disagree. to me being a household name doesn’t prove one being a better artist anymore. i can’t say DMX is better than Jada because he sold more or more people know him. he knows how to work the game. or KNEW cuz apparently now he’s just confused. Jada didn’t have that savvy but him staying true to who he is just like X gives him just as much credibility. Kiss ain’t top 5, but neither is X.
its weird cuz in most cases, i’m going to take the guy with the better discography in a match up like this, and out of X’s 6 or 7 he got 3 good ones. jada put out 2 albums and 1 of em was good, and he been in the game since like 96. i just got respect for the guy, too much to put his lyrical ability aside for the character of one rapper.

Comment by CV to BC? 12.08.08 @ 7:07 am

i didn’t mean him being a household name made him a better artist, it was like another thing on the list of things that put him on that scale of “characters” but yeah, i feel that.

Comment by modi 12.08.08 @ 7:21 am

I’m not going to weigh in on the whole jada vs. X debate because that has been rehashed a few times over in these comments, but I wanted to say that re: spirit equality’s point about respecting what these OG radio personalities have done for hip hop, I think that mentality of “paying dues” meaning that you somehow get some gold badge of respect no matter what you do or say or how you act is absolute kryptonite to the music industry. Westwood has broken a lot of records and done good things, but the guy is a goon, just like flex is a goon, get these corny mothafuckas off the air! And for that matter, when do real bosses pay dues? Real bosses go out and seize the moment and create something new, they don’t scrap in someone’s shadow just to get a little shine later on. If I hear one more OG hip hop head telling me to “pay my respects to people who paved the way” I’m going to lose it…

just my two cents

this some good arguin we doin,
all for the sake of hiphop.
so bigups ta everybody who luvs hiphop enuff ta stand up for their preference.

but last point..

bein a punchline rapper doesnt mean ur a lyricist.
cassidy is a punchline rapper, fab is a punchline rapper, banks is a punchline rapper. and i think we can all agree they arent on anybody top lyricist list. dmx is a lyricist because the shit he says isnt sum witty shit, its sum shit that hits ppl in the soul. the shit he says may not be as eloquent as nas or as genius as jay but i guarantee any song that dmx is on, ull be more likely to remember wat he said compared to jada. and ta prove my point, cv ta bc has been quotin dmx in all his points but has yet ta quote jada. haha

oh boy. you’re right! on all accounts. stefano, better come with some jada heat soon! yes, i put your gov’t out there mr. CV TO BC!
