awww…im really disappointed

How did it work?

The remote reporter was standing in the middle of 35 cameras that took her image from all angles. They also fed positioning information from both the cameras around her, and the CNN studio cameras, into a computer system. The computer combined the video from the cameras, along with the positioning information, and generated an image that looked to be at the correct angle/perspective for the scene.

It then overlayed that video into the CNN newsfeed, over top of the red circle in the floor.

Wolf Blitzer and everyone else in the studio couldn’t see this at all – there was no hologram floating in the room with them. In reality, aside from the coolness of merging all those camera feeds into one 3D model of the reporter, it wasn’t much more advanced than an MTV pop-up video.

Every time somebody on CNN said “hologram”, my inner physicist cringed. True holograms are virtual images that appear to float in space in front of you. Not a special effect added into the video feed by a computer.
