damn.
i remember when me and brian were up in that small ass cubicle at def jam, and shakir walked past. i was being stupid when i yelled, "i wanna work for you shakir!" and he turned around and laughed. nobody in that building was that chill, and you already know who i’m talking about when i say that. people wouldn’t even want you to hop in the elevator at the same time as them. he was the guy who would say, "yo, hop in here son!" so although i didn’t know the guy too well, i did work in the A&R department and i know he was vital to that building. he brought us acts like jeezy and ross, and with that track record alone you know the man had talent. coolest dude in that place, without a doubt. i feel like it was some other $#!t that led to this fuckery, though that’s just me…
that’s all i’ll say about that. rest in peace, sir. and shout out to def jam during these times, man. they work hard over there. if you didn’t hear, read the billboard article.

Indeed, very sad news. Ever since I’ve wanted to get into the A&R field, I’ve always looked up to Shakir as a form of inspiration, like I can become this one of these days. It’s cool that he seemed like a humble person – as you already know it’s hard to find anyone showing a glimpse of humility in this industry. My prayers go out to his family and friends.
Comment by KNOWxONE 11.01.08 @ 10:48 pmYou know I co-sign on that Modi.. He really wasn’t the normal music biz person in terms of how he treated people regardless of level in the organization. Unfortunate loss.
Comment by Alex K. 11.02.08 @ 2:15 amwhat the fuck. the only guy in the industry i respect is gone. me and nick pouring out some hard liquor to this man right here. i swear, RIP for this dude. for real.
Comment by modi 11.02.08 @ 3:04 amRIP for real. Coolest dude in the office. He even dapped me up when i approached him down here in Miami at a concert. Life is crazy man.
Comment by THE Nick Simmons 11.02.08 @ 12:08 pmR.I.P Shakir stewart..
A great man who gave me and my team a chance when nobody would even
let us in the door, he did.
I learned so much about this game from shakir and will remember his words forever.
he told me not to just depend on a” deal” to succeed, but do what you gotta do on the independent level to build worth and respect. so you have a chance to actually make money and not just sit the bench on a label.
when he looked at me, lake and benny and said ” ya’ll know what you gotta do, so do it!!”
we left feeling like we had a mission and nothing would stop us!
but that’s the kind of energy shakir possessed and the world will be less “fresh” without
his influence.
you will be missed and prayers are with your family and loved ones..
Thats life I guess. I think the best way to honour our idols and people we look up to is to live the life we wish we did. Power to all of you.
Comment by nam nam 11.02.08 @ 3:46 pmcompared to the age of the typical exec running a label, this brother was VERY young. he had a lot of decades in the music biz in front of him, so it’s a shame his life was cut so short. my friend also speculated about foul play, but i won’t speculate for the sake of his family. i hope the situation is thoroughly investigated and i pray for all his people to stay positive despite this loss.
Comment by spirit equality 11.02.08 @ 9:50 pmthis shit been fucking with me all weekend. i can’t call it. he was extremely humble, on all of our interactions. restinpeace, indeed.
