im not sure about the concept of the video- african dance and then this notion about love locking someone down…
i dance and study african dance, plus i take an anthropology course on africa. it seems to me that he just wanted to show a different perspective, artistically, howvever, this theme has no connection and it is just a failure to uncderstand africa as a bueatiful-modorn industrial continent. its slightly ofensive because it just a really tainted-american view of african culuture.

I actually don’t like it and I thought so much more could have been done with it. Like if Kanye participated in the whole African thing or if he threw on some neon colored glow in the dark face paint. I don’t know. I just found myself waiting for more to happen. When he was sitting in that white corner I was looking for the padded walls and straight jacket to arrive… Smh.

The only thing i can think of to explain the African references is that the song is about more than just love (of a person) locked down. Maybe it’s about his repression of a love for his homeland? Africa? He’s existing in a “white world” (hence the all white space he’s shot in). Yet regardless of all of his efforts to remain in this white space, his love for Africa can not be surpressed.

I know im stretching it, because Kanye may not be that deep. Just thought id give it a shot.

(but if this was, in fact, the concept of the video, i REALLY dont appreciate the gratuitous shots of black womens’ bodies all throughout – especially at the end. It seemed at certain points the shots became less celebratory of African dance and heritage – and more exploitative and hyper-sexualised).

I love this. The mental density is remarkable.

It seems that the African references are a expression of his thoughts. He is blank (white room, dressed in white, alone) on the outside, but has a heavy mixture of emotions on the inside. The rhythm of the drums reflects his anger and frustration but the use of Africa reflects his unbroken dignity.

Kanye understands more than we think.

Yeah–although definitely struggling to comprehend what Kanye’s going for here, I feel like I agree with Jonna’s assessment the most.

I think the video’s pretty genius, myself, but I don’t think that it should be understood as this–”Kanye’s being ignorant, objectifying Black women and disrespecting Africa,” thing.

I think that the sum total of Kanye’s portrayal of himself idling emo-style in this bare, White room juxtaposed with these images of phalanxes of tribal warriors that seem to attack when the song’s drums kick up, coupled with the song’s lyrics are supposed to be suggestive of being frustrated by love, romance, courting, to the point of depression, or emotional turmoil…(don’t know if I’m saying anything new there)

Why the choice of these iconic images…of Africa, of bushmen, of women, I don’t know. Artistic license, maybe?

Speaking of artistic license, I don’t know that you can go so far as to say that the images of the women in this video are gratuitously sexualized. Sure, there are scantily clad women in this video and sure, they are displaying their goods in a seductive manner, and sure, they have Black features and are wearing what appears to be a type of African garb, etc. etc., but I don’t think that this is their function in terms of the overall concept of the video. This isn’t Tip Drill.

I think by drawing parallels between himself and the tribesmen, which I would say suggest strength, masculinity, energy, etc.–having them rendered immobile at the sight of these women, dancing in unison in the shadows of these women, etc. Kanye is trying to do more to indicate the power that women have power over men in heterosexual relationships if anything, rather than the other way around.

I feel like the portrayal of these women dancing seductively is supposed to serve as a manifestation of romantic desire or “love” for another person in someone’s mind–rather than an actual depiction of reality or a suggestion of how to treat women in general. With the tribesmen being effectively stopped in their tracks or at the sight of these women, and with Kanye having aligned themselves conceptually with them, I feel like he’s trying to say more about how in the course of pursuing love or one’s desire for another person one can effectively become depressed, disheartened, emotionally frustrated, immobilized, whatever…something which I think makes sense considering the way he’s balled up into a fetal position as he sings the song at the end of the video.

In this way, I don’t think that gender or even the tribal references really matter at all in one’s overall conceptual understanding of the video. They’re just symbols. I feel like the women portrayed in this video serve as the objects of desire in this case because of the fact that Kanye just happens to like women, but that he isn’t saying anything about how women should behave in general. Additionally, since the lyrics of the song itself just contain gender neutral pronouns in terms of their identifying a person who is “locked down” by love it doesn’t seem like he’s necessarily trying to talk about men or women in particular, but just a state of mind. (If that makes any sense)

Sure, I guess there is some sort of sexism that will always be latent in the portrayal of a woman (especially a Black woman) serving as an object of desire no matter what, especially in the social context in which we live, but…i dunno. This isn’t Tip Drill.

Kanye may have been satisfied with the video, and it’s hard to say I know how he feels because I don’t. Did he direct it? No. Whether he had input as to how he wanted the video to go is the important question. Or did he just seek someone out and say “Make a video of this song.” He didn’t have to go with it if he didn’t like it. For my two pennies, I honestly do not think there is enough here to support Kanye’s notion of Love being “locked down”. I know he wrote the song and it’s kinda weird to say that, but for MYSELF, I do not believe (my belief not anyone else’s) the VIDEO (visual representation) makes a strong enough connection to express the song. From what I (Me, Myself & I) get from the song I picture Love Lockdown to be something different, and that’s okay. I believe it to be getting away and shutting my heart off, putting it on ice, whatever you wanna call it.
